A Herndon, Va. police officer exchanged gunfire with an assailant Monday night during an investigation of an apparent armed robbery, a Herndon police spokeswoman said.

No one was hit in the gunfire, said the spokeswoman, Lisa Herndon.

The incident began in the downtown area of Herndon at around 7:20 p.m. when the officer came across what appeared to be a robbery. The two men went into a business and pulled out a gun, demanding money and assaulting two female employees, police said.

As the officer chased the suspects on foot and as they fled, one fired at the officer.

“The officer returned fire,” Herndon said. “Nobody was hit; there were no injuries.”

One of the men was quickly caught and taken into custody, and the other was arrested a short time later after he attempted an armed carjacking in the 1100 block of Elden Street, police said.

On Wednesday, police identified the suspects as Edward Mejia Sandoval, 22, and Manuel Enrique Casco, 34, both of Maryland.

Police said Mejia Sandoval was charged with two counts of robbery and other charges. Casco was charged with robbery, carjacking and other charges.

They are both being held without bond.

The police department did not immediately identify the business targeted in the apparent robbery and is continuing to investigate. A handgun was found during an initial investigation.
